      <image:title>Blog - What is medical acupuncture?</image:title>
<image:caption>How can acupuncture help your pet? It works at multiple levels of the nervous system to help with pain control, inflammation, muscle relaxation, and even anxiety. There is a substantial amount of published evidence which shows that the majority of patients will get, at minimum, some obvious pain relief. There are even studies that show that specific acupuncture points can help with nausea, appetite stimulation, pancreatitis, kidney disease, etc. Different sizes and types of needles are used, depending on patient preference and sensitivity. In addition, we often use electrical stimulation (electroacupuncture) to further prompt the nervous system (for example, in dogs with disc or neurodegenerative disease), to help with arthritic pain, and to treat painful areas that are too sore to be needled. In general, the tiny needles are well tolerated and some pets will even fall asleep after they are in place. The first points we place are used to promote feelings of calm. You may even notice your pet’s nose dripping as they settle into a session.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dr. Kim Holzman - Dr. Kim Holzman CCRT, CVPP, VSMT, CVAT, Fear Free Certified Professional</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Holzman was born knowing she wanted to be a veterinarian. At 7 years of age, she was acting as a midwife to her pet guppies, and at 16 had her first job in a vet clinic. She has never looked back! After graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph in 2005, she returned to Ottawa to work in a couple of small animal practices, and joined Cedarview Animal Hospital in November of 2012. Since then, she has obtained certifications in Pain Management, Canine Rehabilitation Therapy, Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (animal chiropractics) and most recently Veterinary Acupuncture. Dr. Holzman takes great personal and professional pride in going that extra mile to help her clients keep their pets healthy and happy. She brings to Cedarview her great enthusiasm for life and a goofy sense of humor, but also takes her job very seriously. Dr. Holzman joined ownership of Cedarview Animal Hospital in 2025. Dr. Holzman has been fortunate enough to be able to extensively pursue two other passions of hers – travel and volunteerism. She has travelled extensively through Europe, Peru, Central America and Asia. She has worked with alpacas, llamas, sheep and guinea pigs in Peru, and has spayed and neutered cats and dogs in Thailand and Northern India. Dr Holzman challenges herself regularly in many different ways – she travelled alone to India and South East Asia, has worked with the homeless, spent a year studying fungus (yes, it’s true!), and has participated in triathlons, yoga classes and half -marathons. She is also an avid reader of fiction and a very enthusiastic gardener. She currently shares her life with her husband Mat, their young son, an ancient pug, a Labrador retriever (a career change dog from the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind), 4 cats, fish and several chickens.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dr. Julia Irwin - Dr. Julia Irwin Fear Free Certified Professional</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Irwin’s interest in veterinary medicine has stemmed from a long love and respect for animals, as well as a love for science and medicine. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at Carleton University in 2018 and graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph in 2023. She was thrilled to move back to Ottawa and begin working at Cedarview Animal Hospital that same year. Dr. Irwin loves working in such a dynamic field that promotes continued growth, and is excited to further her knowledge and skills to benefit her clients and patients. Her current professional interests include surgery, anesthesia, emergency medicine, and primary health care. She also very much enjoys mentoring aspiring veterinarians in their endeavours. Although her focus is on treating canines and felines, Dr. Irwin has been fortunate to work with many other species of animals both prior to and during her veterinary education. She has had the opportunity to work with many of Ontario’s native wildlife species, (orphaned and/or injured) through volunteering she has done at the Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, the Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre, and the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. She also had the opportunity to work with horses by volunteering at The Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Program. In her free time, she loves exploring nature and is always excited to try out a new hobby. Some of her favourites include camping, canoeing, hiking, running, cycling, skiing, and scuba diving. She has recently welcomed a new puppy into her life, Ember, who will soon be a great companion for all of Dr. Irwin’s outdoor adventures!</image:caption>
